West Hartford welcomed students for the first day of school last week. There was a steady stream of families stopping to take a quick picture in front of this sign on their way up to the Norfeldt Elementary School.

This home caught my eye because it is especially well decorated for the summer season. The orange front door with the funky numbers didn’t hurt either – the place has character.

Why is there a folding chair mostly buried in this front yard and spray painted blue? One would think the water shut off value right next to it, which is also painted blue, would be sufficient to mark where the water lateral comes in from the street. What else is buried here that isn’t visible?

There is something reassuring about a business that has succeeded over the course of decades without feeling compelled to update their customer area. To me, it says that they’ve built a loyal following because their service speaks for itself. West Hartford has a lot of businesses like this.
